The Case For Showing Up

Why we build small rooms, and why referral is a filter rather than a formality.

Founders spend most of their working life mediated by a screen: Slack, email, a pitch deck, a dashboard. It's efficient, and it's also quietly isolating. The people best positioned to understand what you're building, what you're carrying, and what you actually need next are often the hardest to get in a room with.

Vela exists because we think that's solvable, not by adding another app, but by taking the opposite approach: build a room, keep it small, and be deliberate about who's in it.

Why small beats big

Sixty guests for Vela Day. Thirty for Vela Ascension. Fifteen for the residencies. None of these numbers are capacity limits we're bumping up against. They're deliberate ceilings. A room of fifteen means you genuinely know everyone by the second day. A room of six hundred means you know no one. Scale is usually the goal in business. Here, it's the thing we're actively designing against.

Referral as a filter, not a formality

Nothing about Vela is open enrollment. Guests come through referral, direct invitation, or an application reviewed for fit. That's not exclusivity for its own sake. It's a filter that does real work. Everyone in the room already has something in common before the day starts: someone they both trust vouched for them being there. That single shared thread is what lets conversations go deep quickly, instead of staying at the surface level networking most founders have learned to tune out.

What actually gets carried home

The measure of a good room isn't how it feels on the day. It's what's still true a month later. A protocol you're actually following. A number you now check. A person you text when something breaks. Vela is built around producing those outcomes deliberately: real diagnostics instead of vague wellness talk, a small enough cohort that relationships form instead of just business cards changing hands, and a structure, from the one-day format through to the standing residencies, designed so the value compounds the more of it you're part of, rather than resetting every time.

An invitation, not a pitch

We're not trying to sell you on attending. We're building a room we'd want to be in ourselves, and inviting people who feel the same way about theirs.
